Traditional Chinese Medicine – History, Diagnosis, Books and Characters

TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, as a far-reaching cultural heritage, achieves more and more attention and recognition. In the past 2016 Brazil Olympic Game, Micheal Phelps and other athletes from all around the world took acupunce treatment (an important diagnosis in Chinese medicine) to relieve their pressure and fatigue.

History of Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine is a subject for diagnosing and preventing disease, and for health improvement as well. Ancient Chinese medicine starts from primitive society and build its systematic theory during the Spring and Autumn Period.  

It kept prosperous until the late Qing Dynasty, when China was under invasion and exploitation from other countries. Modern medicine swarmed into China so that the status of Chinese tradition medicine was greatly threatened. Since SARS phenomenon in 2003, ancient Chinese medicine began recovering.

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis

Common Chinese medicine diagnosis include Chinese medicine, acupunce treatment, cupping, and the four methods of diagnosis (observation, auscultation, interrogation and palpation).

1. Chinese medicine, a general designation, consists of about two thousand of kinds. Its components are from plants, animals, minerals, and even chemical substances.2. Acupunce Treatment, is also named acupuncture and moxibustion. The doctors use a needle to stick into the patient’s body, with the method of twirling to cure disease. To do this, you need to know clearly acupoint on human body.3. Cupping (bá huǒ guàn in Chinese language): The common method is to make the cup stick at human’s body by fire or drawing off the air. It is very useful in relieving pain, expelling moisture, etc. Except for China, cupping is also prevailing in ancient Greek and Rome.4. Four Methods of Diagnosis:

Observation: From the name we can easily understand that this method is to judge   patient’s condition by observing their body shape, color of their face and tongue.

Auscultation: it concludes smelling and listening to the sound.

Interrogation: This method is feasible for both Chinese medicine and Western medicine. The doctor will ask the patient and his/her family for some information to make judgment.

Palpation: palpation in Chinese medicine diagnosis includes two parts,  general palpation of the body in the affected area and palpation of the pulse on the radial artery near the wrist.

There are four masterpieces about TCM that you can obtain more knowledge about it.

  • Huang Di Nei Jing
  • Nan Jing
  • Shang Han Za Bing Lun
  • Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing

Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine has spread all around the world like Japan, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, British, Germany, America, Canada, Vietnam and Malaysia. Compared with Western medicine, Chinese medicine features little after-effect. Hence, it will spread in more countries beyond all doubt.
