jiǎ? jià? Which one is the correct pronunciation of 假?

Here are two Chinese characters: 假的 and 假期. Do you know how to read the two “假”? If you have no idea or are not sure about it, just continue with this article and learn more.

As we know, in Chinese a character is uaually embeded with more than one pronuncitions, which to a certain extent makes the character have more than one meaning. Today, I will teach you “假”, a common word in our daily life.

In the modern Chinese language, this word have two different pronunciations: jiǎ and  jià.

1. jiǎ

Under this pronuncition, it has three common meanings.

1). not real, fake. For example:

假币 (Chinese: 假币, pinyin: jiǎ bì, meaning: fake cash)

假货 (Chinese: 假货, pinyin: jiǎ huò, meaning: fake product)

2). take advantage of . For example:

假公济私 (Chinese: 假公济私, pinyin: jiǎ ɡōnɡ jì sī , meaning: take advantage of the resources of the government or an organization to sever himself)

3). infer, deduce. For example:

假设 (Chinese: 假设, pinyin: jiǎ shè, meaning: it is similar to if)

2. jià

Under this pronunciation, it has only one meaning. It means “leave” or “vacation”. For example:

病假 (Chinese: 病假, pinyin: bìnɡ jià, meaning: sick leave)

年假 (Chinese: 年假, pinyin: nián jià, meaning: annual leave )

暑假 (Chinese: 暑假, pinyin:shǔ jià, meaning: summer vacation )
